Ananse - The Confident Trickster

Ananse - The Confident Trickster

Inspired by Traditional Folktales from the motherland, Ghana.

Popular fictional character Kweku Ananse found in numerous oral and written stories from Ghana. The word ananse represents spider in the Akan language. Characterised as a shrewd and cunning spider, Ananse is well known in literature. He is clever and wise, and most tales refer to him as a trickster. In some tales, Ananse is described as a person, but in others, he is described as a spider.  He is thought to be arrogant and utilises his intelligence to outwit creatures who are often bigger and stronger than him. In a few instances, he puts his knowledge to use by resolving a social issue, emerging as the story's protagonist. However, he is frequently represented as a cunning creature who preys on others. It's not surprising that the majority of Ananse's tales conclude with his defeat.
